Disclosure: This post for Active Kids are Happy kids, is sponsored by YMCA. I have been compensated for this post but always my opinion is my own.
Do you remember when you were younger how often you played outside? I remember being out of my house from the time the sun came up until the street lights came on. When we weren’t in school or doing homework, we were outside playing with friends and enjoying the fresh air. So much has changed since we were younger. Technology plays a big part in our kids’ lives and I think that there are things that make us, as parents, maybe overly cautious about letting them out to play. Also, with our never-ending winter, I feel we don’t get out and active as often as I would like when it’s cold and awful out.
I think if we had a place we could go, as a family, to enjoy even sixty minutes of activity a day, it would make it easier on me as a parent and it would do all of us good. The YMCA offers many different options for families. This year, the YMCA of Greater Toronto is celebrating Healthy Kids Day by opening their doors and welcoming kids, youth, and families to join them for an afternoon filled with fun, FREE activities. Drop by your local YMCA after 2:00 pm on Sunday, April 29 to enjoy everything they have to offer (see the links for the centre specific information below).
Physical activity is also important and can help reduce the risk of countless diseases and conditions like obesity, high blood pressure and even diabetes, not to mention it helps them to burn off all that extra energy which in my house means they sleep really well at night too. There are so many more great reasons to be active and I can tell you since this winter has been especially brutal and so long, it’s time for us to get up and get out of our winter hibernation and start doing some physical activity as a family. I need this and so do my kids.
This YMCA of Greater Toronto celebration was designed to help families get active together and really show them what the YMCA has to offer to help all families get those crucial sixty minutes of activity a day. I can tell you that my whole family visited a YMCA of Greater Toronto not that long ago and we were really impressed with the programs they had including swimming lessons and karate. The location near us also had a running track, cardio and aerobic classes and so many different things to offer my family. I love that we could all go together even if we are doing different things.
