Family vacations are a fantastic way to create wonderful and cherished memories that will last a lifetime. Unfortunately, family vacations can also be quite expensive. It can be hard to figure out how you will afford the family vacation of your dreams, but the truth of the matter is, it’s possible. Even if you are faced with a relatively tight budget, every little bit of savings counts. I wrote about saving for the family getaway of our dreams not that long ago and now I have some ways I plan on doing it.
Start a Travel Fund
Have everyone take responsibility for pitching in on the vacation. Contributing gift money, spare change and even allowances as a group, is a great way to pitch in as a family. You will all reap the benefits once you have saved enough for your exciting travel excursion.
Have a Garage Sale
Go through your home and find any items that you have that are still in great condition but not being used. Your children can even get involved by going through their toys and choosing items they no longer play with. 100% of the proceeds should be designated for your vacation fund.
Start a Change Jar
Dump the contents of your pockets into a jar every time you have change. Starting a change jar can help the money to show up surprisingly fast.
If you find that your family eats out frequently, or spends more money than you’d like on groceries, starting a meal plan can help to curb that. Take the amount you are saving on food each week and put it in your travel account.
Cut Energy Costs
Save on your utility bills but cutting back on your energy use. Make sure to turn off all appliances and lights when they aren’t in use and limit their use during peak times.
Make a Budget
Sit down together as a family and go through your finances. Take an in-depth look at where you can cut back. Be realistic but thrifty. Once you have a set budget, you must stick to it. You can even work the travel savings account into that budget.
Make it a Family Thing
Everyone wants to take part in the family vacation, so why shouldn’t everyone take part in saving for it? At the end of the day, “Team work makes the dream work.” Working towards a common goal is very important and will help to speed up the process of saving.
Create lasting memories on a beautiful family vacation this year. Make sure you know where to cut back, and put money away and you will be enjoying your family vacation in no time.
