It’s happened to the best of us, we open their bedroom door and are greeted by what can only be described as chaos. All we wanted to do, was open their dresser to put some clothes away. Instead, it has become an obstacle course just to get there. No one likes stepping on toys, small ones that essentially feel as though they are taking giant bites out of your tootsies can be especially annoying. It drives you crazy to see their rooms in this state, but it’s even more irritating to sound like a broken record asking them to clean it repeatedly.
There are ways to ensure that your child’s room doesn’t look as though a bomb has hit it, that don’t include a) cleaning it yourself or b) throwing out all their toys. So how do we encourage our kids to tidy their rooms without nagging?
Get Your Kids to Clean Their Rooms Without Nagging
Tell your children that for every item left on the floor, they will get to go to bed 5 minutes earlier that night. Most kids don’t want to go to bed at all let alone earlier than usual, this is a good way to start them thinking about what they are leaving laying around. Knowing that they will have to go to bed earlier for each item, will motivate them to pay more attention before they leave their rooms.
Stick to the rules you create. Let your children know why having a messy room is just not okay. Explain to them why it is important that you have access to their rooms without worrying about stepping on their toys. Make sure that they know you mean business, and why.
Make it Easy
It may be a good idea to invest in some organizational furniture. Making it easier for the children to clean up their rooms, because they will have somewhere to put everything. This way they know what goes where, and to put it there before they leave their rooms. Make sure everything is easy to reach, and even label the storage containers if they can read.
Show Them How
Take the time to show your children how to properly tidy a mess. Show them where everything goes, and allow them to help you at the same time. Showing them the most efficient way to clean their rooms, we’ll show them that it really is not as time-consuming as they thought.
It is not impossible to get your kids to clean up their rooms no matter how impossible it seems! Just work with them, be firm and stick to the rules and they should have clean rooms in no time.
