I am having a hard time with the fact that it’s August already. I am not sure what happened but since I turned 40 this year, time seems to be getting away from me. This September is going to a little hectic here as I will have 4 kids in 3 schools. I have one headed off to high-school, one off to middle school, one in grade 3 and then my little buddy is starting JK this year, which has me a little sad as I don’t think I am ready for him to be gone all day. Having said all that, we need to be super organized this year as getting all these guys out of the house is going to be a little chaotic, so we need to be ready. So here are my tips for getting everyone organized and off to school without too many meltdowns.
- Make lunches and snacks the night before if possible. Sometimes I can’t always do this as my kids take hot lunches a lot in the winter but I usually have all snacks and water packed and then I just add the hot lunch in the morning. This year I have 4 kids with lunches so we will have to do them the night before to make sure we all have enough time in the morning.
- Backpacks need to be packed up and at the front door the night before as well. Lunch bags, homework and any notes I need have to be taken out as soon as they get home from school and put on the cork board in our front hall, that way it becomes routine and no letters, permission slips or teachers notes get missed. Make sure the backpacks you choose are large enough to fit everything the kids need in a day and have easily accessible pockets like the Woods Georgina DayPack. It even has a pocket to store a smart phone or iPod with a spot for the headphones to come out as well. With a padded sleeve in the back of the pack for a laptop, it makes the Woods Daypack a versatile bag for any older child going back to school. How about the Kids Animal Packs for the younger ones that feature a magnetic closure for easy open and a large main compartment easy for little hands to find things in.
- Get a large calendar and a cork board/white board. I have a calendar that sticks to the freezer part of my fridge and I use that to write down all events, appointments, birthdays, sports, classes, and anything else I feel is super important. I also have a cork board/white board in our front hall that acts as a note board and where all my kids pin their important stuff. I look at it nightly, sign and put back in their backpacks. The younger ones also have agendas which I check nightly as well.
- I have all the kids set out what they want to wear the night before and I also make them make sure all shoes, boots, umbrellas, and jackets are all in the front hall where they should be as well.
I never really thought of Canadian Tire as a place to do my back to school shopping, although truth be told they are the first place I look for storage and organization, they really do have everything I need to get my kids organized and ready for the school year ahead.
*CONTEST ALERT: Canadian Tire will be launching a contest on August 14th to help families prep for back to school this fall. Check back next week for more information.
