He was the smallest baby I have had. He was born 5 weeks early and weighed only 5 lbs 10 oz, which for 5 weeks early was actually a pretty good size. I remember thinking I just need to hold him close and keep him safe.
I also remember when the doctor told me they were taking him to the NICU. I was scared and sad because I always want my babies close to me and to think that he would be in an incubator away from me, when being so little, was upsetting for me.
I remember when they first laid him on my chest and that feeling of skin-to-skin contact between me and the little being that I grew inside my womb for 35 weeks. There is no way I can explain the feeling of utter love that I felt for him. I also knew how important that first skin-to-skin contact would be for him especially since he was early. The positive emotions that it brings out in you and how it helps baby can be felt right away.
His breathing slowed, he stopped crying, he closed his eyes, and I knew in that moment that everything would be okay. I spent the next 4 days in the NICU with him breastfeeding and spending hours with him on my chest in just a diaper. My hospital provides diapers and those diapers were Huggies little snugglers in preemie and newborn size (although the newborn was huge on his little bum).
Huggies understands that there is nothing more important or more powerful than those first hugs with your baby. They were there when my little guy needed the softness and protection the most. Did you know that children can have upwards of 5,000 diaper changes in their lifetime? Why not make the most of that precious time and fill them with hugs, that’s over 5,000 opportunities to hug your child. There is nothing better than hugging a happy baby in a clean diaper with super soft skin from the Natural Care wipes and lotions while using our favourite blanket and plush.
Huggies Little Snugglers have tiny, soft pillows that provide an extra cushiony layer of protection between the diaper and baby’s delicate skin. The diaper offers 12 hours of leakage protection to keep baby dry and healthy, and, for those first days after baby is born, the perfectly shaped umbilical cut-out (on the preemie and newborn sizes only) help protect healing belly-buttons.
So today, on Global Hug Your Kid Day, spend a minute or two and hug those precious little ones (or in my case bigger ones) and let them know how much they are loved.
