I recently posted about how I’m not ever going to win any awards for my lunchtime creativity or send Pinterest worthy creations in my kids’ lunch boxes. I’m also going to go on the record right now and say that while I plan to do some fun stuff with the kids over the summer break, I’m not going to be following any of the (well-intentioned I’m sure) lists of “100 things you should do to enrich your kids’ summer” or “how to make everyday fun on summer vacation”. This may make me the worst mommy ever in some people’s minds but that’s okay. They have to be on a schedule the entire school year so I won’t be scheduling them over the summer too. I also understand that being home with your kids all summer isn’t an option for most families either and that summer camp can be the only option for those parents.
I just can’t get behind the theory that parents (and let’s be honest here – the expectations mostly fall on moms) exist primarily to entertain their children 24/7 when they’re not at school. I was not entertained around the clock and I think I turned out pretty well thankyouverymuch. I also don’t see the harm in letting my kids get bored and have to find their own entertainment. Sorry kiddies mommy has a life and it’s not *all* about you; if you’re really that bored though, I’m sure I can find some chores you can do. My kids know that if they whine about being bored, I’ll find them something to do.
Just because my kids aren’t going to be in camp every week of the summer (seriously, who can afford that!) or doing fun and education activities for hours every day doesn’t mean that I’m not going to have some really cool activities planned for over the break. I’m planning on some inexpensive day trips around the city, some outdoor fun with sidewalk chalk, bubbles, and trips to the local library. There will be backyard fun, bicycles for those who are old enough to ride them, and homemade popsicles. There will also probably be sibling squabbles, messy rooms, and threats to change the wi-fi password if kids don’t get off devices. All in all, I think it’s going to be a pretty darn good summer.
Are you on a schedule this summer or are you just playing it by ear?
