Although I do not suffer from this affliction (that I know of or have been tested for) my ex-husband most definitely did and still does. It has to be one of the scariest things I have ever had to deal with besides one of my children being very sick and I am sure it is no picnic for him. Imagine being woken up to a person trying and struggling to catch their breath, not every case is this extreme and can simply be listening to your partner’s constant snoring that keeps you awake at night. I’m sure that you know that in long-term relationships, the root of some problems can stem from the bedroom, but not in the way you think! It might come as a surprise that Sleep Apnea is actually one of the most difficult bedroom issues that a lot of couples face today.
Sleep apnea is well known to cause eventual breakups. In fact, around 75% of people diagnosed with Sleep Apnea have been pushed to find a solution by their sleepless partner. Sleep Apnea actually causes you to stop breathing (often for 10-30 seconds per episode) until the brain reacts to the problem – and you end up gasping for breath. In my ex-husband’s case, he would literally need a minute or two to catch his breath again, it got so bad. We learned that after his sleep study that he literally stopped breathing about 36 times in a few hours. It helped explained his chronic fatigue, constant irritability and the fact that even if he slept for 8 hours he woke up tired. Did you know that 90% of sleep apnea sufferers have never even been diagnosed?
